Deck The Chairs
Jax Beach Deck The Chairs
I often refer to Deck The Chairs (DTC) as my largest art project. It was created in 2013 to fill a void during the Jax Beach holiday season. In prior years, a dark downtown public park would greet residents and visitors. The first year we had a small DTC event with 16 decorated lifeguard chairs. The following year, after DTC formalized as a nonprofit, Jax Beach residents and business owners committed to creating the Jax Beach Deck The Chairs (JBDTC) tradition. Since those first two years of development and strategic planning, the event has grown beyond all expectations. JBDTC is a year-round commitment. Thousands of volunteer hours, design/build, planning and fundraising lead up to event launch. Several hundred more hours are required to maintain the space and ensure that the more than 65,000 visitors have a safe, fun, and memorable experience. We have received regional and national recognition for the creative inspiration shared through the decorated lifeguard chair display. The social shares and eyeballs on JBDTC have surpassed several million. I am honored to work with a wonderful DTC Board and dozens of civic leaders who appreciate what this event means to so many. We hope to see 2020 mark eight successful years. To learn more, visit deckthechairs.org.
